Dr. Katsuhiko Hayashi, PI in PRIMe, was selected as Nature’s 10 in 2023, which is the Ten people (and one non-human) who helped shape science. His research result was highly eveluated because it could help to save species on the brink of extinction.
Dr. Hayashi’s research group achieved a significant breakthrough by generating mice from male cells. Initially, they generated iPS cells from the tail tissue of male mice, which inherently carries female chromosomes. Through the fertilization of these ova with spermatozoa from different male mice, they validated the efficacy of their innovative method in the birth of healthy pups.
